Cesspool Locating in Portland

Most original cesspool are located ~10′ directly back from the main 4″ sewer vent stack on the roof (the big pipe that isn’t a chimney). This pipe is often over a kitchen or near a bathroom. You may notice a slight depression or circle or differently colored grass/ groundcover in this spot if there is no basement in the home. Often a house will have a replacement cesspool located 10′ or 15′ laterally from the first cesspool. Here is the information the City of Portland has given on cesspool location. Here is the Wikipedia article about cesspools where the graphic came from, here. Other things to note include: GPR can be used to detect some, but not all, septic tanks or cesspool. But the GPR not finding anything does not necessarily mean that there is nothing on site, the GPR has so many limitations in what it can find and because it can only scan flat open areas it means that the city will usually never accept a GPR scan report to indicate that a cesspool is not present. The GPR cart is a lawnmower sized object that can only scan areas that are flat and open. It must pass over an area at different directions to get a useful scan there, because of this the GPR can usually not get a full scan within a few feet of any thing that is not flat ground. Debris piles, fences, machines, structures, decks, large plants, and anything of that nature will create an area that cannot be scanned under or directly around. Even in cases where the area is completely flat and empty, due to the nature of how GPR works there can never be an guarantee that an area does not have something underground that cannot be detected by the GPR. The way normal utility locating works is by tracking the path of a conductive utility from a known connection spot. Septic tank drainfield lines cannot be located by normal means since they are not metal wires or pipes unless the pipes are open to scoping or an accessible tracer wire is present. We can use ground penetrating radar to try and find drainfield lines when that service is specifically asked for, but we don’t normally run the GPR around areas without being asked to or having a reason to do so. While GPR can be used in some cases to locate drainfield lines it cannot find all drainfield lines. It can be fairly time consuming to run the radar back and forth in at least 2 directions over any area, if the machine is not moving smoothly it might need to be done again or not get usable results. If you want to do anything around a septic tank then what we might recommend is that you should get a septic company to dig up the tank and scope the drainfield to the first distribution box so that can be located and dug up and then each additional d-box can be scoped and located. That is the only way to locate drainfield lines for sure. Our guys cannot dig up or open d-boxs so this is not a service we offer, if the clients wants to dig up and open the boxes then we can scope the line to locate them.
