DIY Home Water Leak Detection
If you’re not sure if you have a water leak there is a simple way to test. Turn off the water and see if the meter runs.
Set up the Test:
Shut off all water use in the house. Close all sinks, faucets, and turn off any washing machines or dishwashers.
Go to the water meter and take a photo of the reading on it, make sure it’s legible. Wait at least 15 minutes then take another photo and compare. – If the dials are different then water is being used. Go back and check all the rooms with water as well as any irrigation systems and listen to them for a leak then turn off their water and repeat the process.
If you have a shut off valve at your house turn it off. It would likely be in a basement if there is one, in a box buried just outside the home past the hose bib which is in-line with the water meter, or in the crawlspace on the water pipe either in the rafters or on the pipe as it comes out of the ground. If the meter still runs when this is turned off then probably have a buried leak. Now is the time to call us.
If you find that you have a leak we can help you isolate this location. Using acoustic listening and thermal imaging technology we can work indoors or out. We can find most leaks even in deep soil and under concrete or asphalt.

Always call 811 if Digging

If this isn’t good enough for you and you still want to find out how to locate water lines in a yard, then use a private locator like Rush Locates.
Almost everyone doing any digging is required by law in Oregon (ORS 757.542 – 562 and 757.993 and in Oregon Administrative Rules, Chapter 952) and Washington (RCW 19.122) to call 811 or get a public utility locate. Learn more about 811 and the requirements for digging with their FAQ.
